Schmidt has publicly stated that he does not want voters of the AfD, an anti-Islamic and Eurosceptic party, to come to his theater. Quotes from the mail first sent to his employees, and then published on the Friedrichstadt-Palast Facebook page: "Right-wing populism isn't just a problem in the East [of Germany], but here in the East the problem is the greatest." [...] "In Future we want to distance ourselves even more from 20 or 25 percent of our potential customers in the East and from idiots with a migrant background as well, of course."
Schmidt is a member of the Jewish Forum for Democracy and against Antisemitism. The Forum "promotes inter-religious and intercultural dialogue, offers help to victims of political or religious persecution and fights against antisemitism and racism."
