Conseil Représentatif des Institutions juives de France (CRIF)

Conseil Représentatif des Institutions juives de France (CRIF) (English: Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions) is an umbrella organization of French Jewish organizations. It is the official French affiliate of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), the world-wide umbrella organization of Jewish communities, and of the European Jewish Congress.

  • It opposes antisemitism and policies that they perceive to be antisemitic. It generally supports Zionist goals and the state of Israel, although CRIF denounced Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's 2004 characterization of antisemitism in France and his calls for all French Jews to emigrate to Israel.

  • French Jews demanded the country’s Republican party take disciplinary action against a lawmaker who said Hillary Clinton endangers Europe because she is controlled by Zionists. The president of CRIF, the umbrella group of French Jewish communities, made the demand in a statement Thursday about Jean Fréderic Poisson, a National Assembly lawmaker whose Christian Democratic Party is a right-wing outlier of The Republicans center-right coalition in the 2017 presidential election.

  • CRIF was quick to condemn an "anti-semitic graffiti" that later turned out to be the work of a Jew. Quote from the article: 'The Crif Marseille-Provence wishes to express its outrage at the anti-Semitic inscriptions found on our streets in the city center last weekend. Indeed, several tags have been discovered, the word "Jew" being registered on storefronts and garage doors, rue de Roux-de-Brignoles in the 6th arrondissement of Marseille. The Crif Marseille-Provence remains shocked by these acts, the fact of writing the word "Jew" on a trade recalling the darkest hours of history. We can not tolerate such actions, either in form or in substance.'

  • “Our hope is to see [the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism] integrated into French law. Today, the main vector for antisemitism is anti-Zionism and this definition states clearly that anti-Zionism isn’t just criticism against Israel. “We were pretty satisfied with the latest government plan to combat antisemitism online but the anti-Zionist aspect is still missing.” [Francis Kalifat, who leads the French Jewish umbrella group Crif.]
