Josef Slowik (born 1991) is based in Jena, Germany. He studied material sciences until he was arrested in Vienna in January 2014. He is part of the Socialist Youth of Germany – Falcons, the youth organisation of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).
Slowik led the violent attack by masked Antifa activists on Jan, 24th 2014 on the annual Academics Ball (Akademikerball) organized by the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ). In 2015 he received a one year prison sentence confirmed by the highest Austrian court, despite a massive press campaign both in Germany and Austria picturing him as a innocent victim of Austrian justice system. Several NGOs including Amnesty International tried to intervene in his case. A large fundraising campaign was organized by Antifa groups and his family in order to finance the defense.
2014 up until 2015
In Jena, on the 13th of June 2014, Josef S. was awarded the 13th Prize for Civil Courage. The Mayor of Jena, Albrecht Schröter, handed the award to Slowik's sister in Slowik's absence. Slowik is, next to Lothar König, the second person who received the award for civil courage during an ongoing trial.
