Jürgen Rüttgers (26 June, 1951) is a German CDU politician who was the 9th Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia from 2005 to 2010.
Rüttgers is in support of creating a United States of Europe from the current European Union. He is also against the idea of a nation-state, claiming that "the equation of folk, nation and state relies on antiquated thought."
Rüttgers wrote an article at Huffington Post Germany in support of the European Union and against nationalists and populists. He quotes François Mitterrand in saying that "nationalism means war", and claims that without a democratic and free European Union there is no hope for Europe and Germany. In an accompanying video to the article Rüttergs claims that populists are fighting against "Europe" [i.e. the European Union], and he asks the people to counter the populists. Furthermore he states that every German is already a dual citizen of Germany and "Europe" [i.e. the European Union].
