[...] Garron Helm, 21, was jailed for four weeks for sending an offensive, indecent or obscene message (in a tweet) to Luciana Berger, a Jewish MP from Liverpool Wavertree, who said: "Hate crime is not tolerated in our country. I hope this case serves as an encouragement to others to report hate crime whenever it rears its ugly head."
Berger was a National Executive Committee member of the National Union of Students. She co-convened the NUS Anti-Racism/Anti-Fascism Campaign. In April 2005, she resigned from the Executive Committee, accusing other NEC members of anti-Semitism.
Writes on her website: "I welcome the Government’s commitment to resettle 20,000 Syrian refugees in the UK over the next five years. Indeed, Britain has a long, proud history of providing sanctuary for those fleeing persecution. However, this is now the greatest refugee crisis that we have seen since the Second World War and I do not believe that the Government’s plans are anywhere near equal to the scale of this humanitarian catastrophe."
