Döpfner has recieved the B'nai B'rith Award of Merit for supporting the state of Israel and Jewish people. He regards it as necessary to defend Israel, since "modern Anti-Semitism is often cloaked as Anti-Israelism, and as such, we, as Germans, must stand by Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East."
Döpfner called for a more "defensive democracy" in light of the Paris terror attacks. He states that Germany must establish a common culture which all immigrants must follow, close the borders and intervene militarily in Syria; otherwise, Germany would see the return of "ugly xenopobia", which could "lead to civil war."
Döpfner stated: "Israel and Europe should have an understanding of absolutely common interests in the defense of democracy and the values of the free Western world. Israel is the bridgehead of democracy in the Middle East. So it is in the interests of Europe to support it and to strengthen it. We share the same cultural roots and we share the same security interests and foreign policy interests. Let's bring it closer together."
Mathias Döpfner received Arno-Lustiger Prize for his efforts in building German-Israel relations in 2015. "Mathias Döpfner, CEO of the Axel Springer media group, whose newspapers and magazines generally counter anti-Israel bias common to German media, also expressed concern over the disparity between the German government’s words and actions. Support for Israel’s right to exist is built into Axel Springer’s platform."
