Federal Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU) rejected the isolation of Europe against immigration. "The walling-off is what would break us and degenerate us into inbreeding," he told the weekly "Die Zeit". "For us, muslims in Germany are an enrichment of our openness and our diversity." [...] "There is nevertheless an enormous innovatory potential!"
German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on Saturday that immigration is good for the country and politicians must explain better that everyone stands to gain from it, in response to the rise of a new movement opposing an influx of Muslim immigrants. [...] "The world is more open and immigration helps everyone. Just as we used millions of refugees and expellees after World War Two to rebuild .. so we need immigration today," Schaeuble told Bild Online when asked about the popularity of PEGIDA.
Quote from an interview with Spiegel Online: "SPIEGEL ONLINE: You just recently set aside the €12 billion budget surplus to take care of the costs associated with the refugee crisis. Where will all that money go? Schäuble: About half of it has already been included in the 2016 budget -- to assist states and municipalities in providing shelter, for example. And it is clear to us that we will have to become more involved in our neighboring regions so that the migration pressures aren't so high there. Of course the budget negotiations will be difficult, as they always are. I think we will have to spend more on defense, for infrastructure, for extension of the broadband network and also for domestic security."
Quote from an interview with Spiegel Online: "About three million Muslims live in the country, but we have no relationship to our diverse Muslim society, despite the fact that it's an established part of our larger society. We need to build a stronger foundation for the relationship between Muslims and the state. Otherwise we will not be able to meet the challenges of integration and the threats posed by international terrorism. If we want to prevent attacks, we'll need more information and better integration."
Quote from an interview with Spiegel Online: "SPIEGEL: The case of the two young Lebanese men who allegedly built suitcase bombs illustrates just how we can be affected by global conflicts. Schäuble: The cartoon dispute was probably one of the motives in that case. The cartoons were certainly criticized in German mosques, but the imams expressly called upon Muslims not to resort to violence."
